Lessons in Love from Chobe’s Wildlife

February invites us to celebrate love in all its forms, and at Chobe Game Lodge, love takes on a life of its own. It’s an emotion that awakens all the senses—seen, felt, heard, and touched. Here, love flows endlessly, wild and pure, much like the untamed landscape that surrounds you.

For lessons in love from Chobe’s wildlife, twice-daily game drives and motorboat safaris await. From subtle tokens of affection to grandiose gestures, you may discover that love, regardless of its teachers, is rather infectious. Here is some wildlife love to look out for:

ELEPHANTS

Male elephants, or bulls, enter a unique phase called musth during courtship, where they release a hormone-rich fluid that signals their readiness to mate. The pheromone is especially potent. After your guide points it out once, it’s a smell you’re likely to remember. These magnificent creatures also communicate through deep, rumbling calls and gentle trunk touches, creating an intimate connection with females.

Lessons in Love from Elephants: Remember your cologne; sweet talking can be sweet; and a tender touch goes a long way.

GIRAFFES

Romance among giraffes unfolds through an elegant yet competitive ritual known as “necking.” Males swing their necks and clash their heads in a graceful display of strength and dominance. When one emerges victorious, he gently approaches the female, testing her receptiveness with soft nuzzles and subtle gestures. This captivating blend of power and tenderness creates a beautiful, almost dance-like courtship, showcasing both affection and strength.

Lessons in Love from Giraffes: Fight for those you cherish; ask how your loved ones feel; and celebrate your wins together.

BIRDS

Chobe’s vibrant birdlife fills the park with enchanting melodies, their colourful flocks soaring through the air. African fish eagles serenade their mates with soulful calls, gliding in perfect harmony across the sky. Meanwhile, the lilac-breasted roller, often called “the most beautiful bird in Africa,” dazzles with its acrobatic flights, creating a breathtaking aerial display of love and grace. Some species engage in gift-giving, offering sticks, flowers, or food, or practice feather displays and dances, among brilliant displays of affection.

Lessons in Love from Birds: Music and dancing never get old; small gifts of appreciation are incredibly thoughtful; and getting a little dressed up for your partner every now and then is important.

BABOONS

Baboons display their affection through grooming, a bonding activity that fosters trust and connection. Males also exhibit protective behaviours, standing guard to ensure their chosen mate’s safety, proving that love in the wild is as much about devotion as it is about attraction.

Lessons in Love from Baboons: Small acts of self-care go a long way; devotion is key; and making your loved ones feel safe and secure is a priceless gift.

CROCODILES

Even crocodiles, the ancient rulers of the waterways, have their courtship charms. Males produce deep bellows and create water vibrations by slapping their snouts or tails against the surface. These resonating sounds travel far, attracting females and setting the stage for their prehistoric love story.

Lessons in Love from Crocodiles: Regardless of age or time, remember to tell the people that you love what they mean to you.

IMPALAS

Male impalas take a more theatrical approach to love, establishing temporary territories and engaging in dramatic horn battles to impress potential mates. Their loud calls and snorts echo through the park, a bold proclamation of their readiness and determination.

Lessons in Love from Impalas: It’s not always about subtle acts. Sometimes, a bold, grandiose gesture is wonderful.
